| This page updated on February 25, 2010 11:41 AM"Thank you for all of your help with our Choir Festival! The students REALLY enjoyed the entire experience. I received many comments about how unique our concert was and how wonderful it was to have something like S.O.U.L. in our community. All four of the singers were exceptional, well mannered people. Thanks again for all of your help. We will definitely keep S.O.U.L. in mind for our future." Jennifer Weyrick, Choral Director South Adams Jr/Sr High School, Berne, IN
"The group did a wonderfu job! They were friendly, outgoing, willing performers, and also very open to sharing about their countries. I especially liked the long duration that they spoke in their native tongues... it gave everyone ample chance to listen (in bewilderment) before they translated." Michelle Mitrik, Assistant Professor of Spanish Walters State Community College, Morristown, TN "It was great! I would like to sign up again for next year." Grace Jeong, Music Director Whitney Young High School, Chicago, IL "This weekend was a smashing success! The singers and Jackie were all wonderful on every level--they were friendly, easy to talk to, welcomed our questions, and of course were fantastic musicians. Thanks so much for working with us. I look forward to being able to host your artists again in the future." Brian Clissold, Choir Director Whitelick Presbyterian Church, Avon, IN "The quartet sounds terrific, and they are all very personable... You are doing a terrific thing with S.O.U.L. The world (particularly America) needs this! The audience reaction was very positive - from people of all ages." Steve Szalaj, Music Professor McHenry Community College, Crystal Lake, IL "Thank you for your brilliant idea for SOUL, for devoting time and energy to the organization, and for inviting us into the SOUL family! We had a fabulous party here last night with the singers, [the Tour Manager], the host families, and a few hangers-on and I wanted to express our gratitude to you... We had delicious and plentiful food and drink, a talent show, a mini-review of SOUL songs, and lots of great conversation. Honestly, the evening reinforced my faith in humanity! What a difference you are making in the world." Monica Drane, Host Family Coordinator and S.O.U.L. Supporter Chicago, IL "We thoroughly enjoyed the Singers again this year!! Their performance was well received by both lower and upper elementary children. The audiences were spell bound by the different languages and beautiful musicality of Makly, Steve, Teele and Zuly. Our host families were most complimentary of their visit as well. We only wish the residency could have been longer than just one day! Thank you so much for the opportunity to bring a little of the World to our students in such a delightful celebration." Beth Post, Creative Arts Teacher Williamston, MI "Your singers were wonderful, very talented and their personal interactions with the students were outstanding. My students were captivated. I'm sorry it had to be such a brief visit. [Your Tour Manager] did an excellent job as well. All in all, it was most positive and inspiring for my students." Anna Speck, Vocal Music Teacher Cranbrook Academy, Bloomfield Hills, MI "It was awesome!! You always manage to find great personalities to work with kids. We love them and want them back next year!" Julie Powers, Principal Lockwood School- Eaton Rapids, MI "We had a wonderful day together! I think [S.O.U.L. 2010] may have been the most engaging thus far. Our kids REALLY enjoyed them...even our "cool" kids - who are sometimes a bit more aloof - really got into it. So bravo!!! and THANK YOU!" Mo Newton, School Administrator Montessori Children's House- Lansing, MI "We had a beautiful day with S.O.U.L. Our students were completely captivated by them. The smaller group sessions were equally engaging and very personal. The music that they sang individually and together was well performed and unbelievably soulful. Your program is well named. Having toured quite a bit, I know that many decisions are made at the moment, based on audience response and your sense of a community's needs. Your singers could not have been more tuned in to the needs of our community that day. We were truly blessed! You have created a very worthwhile venture here. I look forward to a future S.O.U.L. performance! Bill Alford, Music Department Chair The Pennington School- Pennington, NJ "I want to extend our deepest gratitude for the gifts of music, wisdom, laughter and connection that were brought to our community by SOUL. Thanks again for your incredible vision of this possibility and then your commitment to make it happen." Rev Debra Faulk, Minister Don Heights Unitarian Congregation- Toronto, ON "We had a wonderful Sunday with S.O.U.L. What a lovely group. Martins, Corrine, Subi and Rory were all very charming and sang beautifully together. It was a powerful service." Rev. Diane Rollert, Minister Unitarian Church of Montreal- Montreal, QC "It was my pleasure to host S.O.U.L.! Our school REALLY enjoyed having the group perform for us!" Julie Olson, Music Teacher Nantucket Elementary- Crofton, MD "I cannot find the words to describe to you what an amazing day we had here at SMSA. Rory, Corrinne, Subi and Martins were dynamic, gracious, FUN!! and musically speaking, powerful. Great sound and stellar musicianship. The Tour Manager is a great balance!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Carol Ann Susdorff- Music Teacher St. Mary/St. Alphonsus School- Glens Falls, NY "They were TERRIFIC!!!!! They sang happy birthday in each of their languages to one of the students who had a birthday. Their sets for the older kids were well timed, with a good amount of listening and participation experience. My prinicipal and assistant principal came up for a while and were very impressed with the group. Thanks again for a great experience for our kids." Maria Schwab- Music Teacher Public School #84- Astoria, NY (NYC) "The musical presentation was at a very high and professional level. It was a pleasure working with you and the singers. It was a pleasure to talk with them personaly after the performance."
John Students- Board Member New Jersey Latvian Center- Freehold, NJ "They were a real hit! There was a special connection begun here as the musicians shared such personal parts of themselves and their culture, that the audience didn’t want the sharing to end." Marc Lambert- Assistant Director Puffin Cultural Forum, Teaneck, NJ "I enjoyed working with [S.O.U.L.]. [They] have really given me an absolutely marvelous experience I will remember the rest of my life." Lila Hunt- Music Student Southwest Virginia Schools, Richlands, VA "We had a fantastic time. We truly appreciated the opportunity to meet such a nice group of talented musicians." Chris Eng- Host Coordinator UU Church of Athens and Sheshequin, PA "We had a TERRIFIC day. The singers were engaging, the students impressed and the schedule kept everyone moving. I so enjoyed getting to know all four singers and the Tour Manager." Donna Burkholder- Choir Teacher
Conestoga Valley MS, Lancaster, PA "Thanks! The S.O.U.L. singers were wonderful. Sign Sherwood up for next year." Bill Evans- Choral Director Sherwood High School, Sandy Spring, MD "I received nothing but rave reviews. They are truly talented. I had a couple of ladies from the church come to the performance Thurs. night in the Union Ballroom and said that they enjoyed it so much they wanted to come back and hear them again! I received so many compliments on how much they enjoyed them and how much they appreciated me bringing them to campus. I can't think of any improvements - I love the way they each introduce themselves and get the audience involved in the discussion. ...We enjoyed having them and I hope they enjoyed their stay at Georgia Southern." Angie Threatte- Center for International Studies Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, GA "I just wanted to follow up on our visit with S.O.U.L. yesterday. I can't express how much my students and I enjoyed ourselves again this year. The singers were not only very talented, but also very personable. We had so much fun just chatting with them. Their rapport on and off stage was amazing. My students can't stop talking about S.O.U.L. this morning. We will most definitely be scheduling another workshop next year. Thank you so much for giving us this opportunity!" Laura Adkison, Choir Teacher Allen Nease HS, Ponte Vedra, FL "I just wanted to thank you for contacting us regarding your group. Their performance was great. The students loved it and even many of my teachers and principal enjoyed the experience. I appreciate your time to put these people together and to travel to make it a great experience for students to learn about other cultures, instruments and music. Thanks." Emily Hickey, Music Teacher Grassy Lake Elementary, Minneola, FL
"I thought the program was absolutely fantastic! And so did our students! I want all of the performing arts students to see it next year! Thank you so much for coming. I can't think of anything that needs improvement. I was so impressed with the musicianship and skill of the singers. Additionally, they were so charming and engaging. Outstanding!!!!! Kerrie Couchois, Director of Choral Activities Braden River High Schoo, Bradenton, FL "They were fantastic. You can tell they love what they have a chance to do. Our residents loved it and are still talking about it. We will definitely love to have you back next year. Thank you again for contacting us and we would not change a thing!!!" Carole Beck, Activities Director Freedom Village, Bradenton, FL "Thank you so much for the fun presentation today. Our children really enjoyed it. The show was so different from what they are used to seeing. They were singing, dancing, and asking interesting questions. We hope to have you back again with people from different countries to share their backgrounds and musical cultures. Your program was great and very interesting. The children really loved the sound of the drums." Christopher R. Cann, Assistant Principal Colonial Elementary, Ft. Myers, FL "Excellent program Monday night! We only had about 27 in attendance, but there were several who have attended each year and said this was the best yet. I feel that even though we're a small venue, we get the same quality program as the large audiences. The entertainment is consistently good and fresh. We hope to be able to continue our annual 'S.O.U.L. Tradition'." Sheila Ortyl, Library Director Mary Esther Public Library, Mary Esther, FL "I just want to thank you again so very much for all of the effort you put in to make sure my class could hear the SOULful group here last week. I can not say how so very much we all enjoyed not only their singing talent, but their abilitiy to connect with the students as well. As you know I teach Sociology and this was a wonderful way of bringing the topic on 'Culture' to light. Thank you again."
Sociology Professor Nicholls State University, Thibodaux, LA "Your group was awesome!! Thank you for coming." Nancy Cardinal, Youth Services Program Director Fort Walton Beach Public Library, Fort Walton Beach, FL "First and foremost, S.O.U.L., was absolutely the most amazing thing I have been able to attend at Nicholls. I truly cannot believe that such a talented group of individuals were able to perform in our small Louisiana town. My first observation about the singers was the amazing chemistry the four of them share while performing. They are truly one group, and I feel if even one of them was not there, the performance would not be complete. Their harmonies were absolutely beautiful, and I am so glad that someone united these voices from around the world. Another thing I found intriguing was their ability to sing in four different languages. Since they all did not grow up speaking these various languages, I imagine that learning their pieces was not an easy task; however, S.O.U.L. made it look so simple. I loved that each singer had a chance to lead a song from their own country. My favorite piece was the song from Korea. The woman’s voice gave me chills from the time she sang her first note until long after she was finished. Being a dancer, I envisioned a beautiful modern piece being danced to the song. My only complaint about the performance was that I did not get to see more! I could not believe the remarkable projection of the singer’s voices. I would have paid a full concert ticket price to view what I had the opportunity to view in one of my classes! With their harmonious voices and fascinating cultural diversity, I found S.O.U.L. to be breathtaking, and I would advise anyone who can to see them!"
Nicholls State University Student "These four young people abosultely wonderfully represented their countries. I’ll do whatever I can to keep this program going!" Gail Guidry "It was a great experience hosting S.O.U.L. and having them perform at our church. We truly enjoyed the opportunity to get to know each of them- they are a phenomenal bunch! All of the host families were very impressed with how polite and considerate their guest was. And, of course, their performance on Sunday had members of the church already asking- "How can we get them to come back?" Hattiesburg, MS is very impressed with your organization and would love to help out in the years to come. I'm glad S.O.U.L.'s first trip to MS was a success! Nichole Clark, Host Family Hattiesburg UU Church, Hattiesburg, MS "I just got home from the concert. It was WONDERFUL. We had about 60 people turn out, which for a wednesday night in such a heavily church active town is pretty good. All the singers were delightful, Steve was great, and the program was so exciting. I could not be happier with the way it turned out. Let's do this again next year. I think we might be able to make this a regular thing." Bryan Page, Music Director Covenant Presbyterian Church, Huntsville, AL "Once again, the SOUL concert at the church was wonderful! The word has really gotten out among our congregation that the singers are not to be missed. You do a tremendous job of choosing not only wonderful musicians but also wonderful personalities! I look forward to meeting a new group of singers next spring." Kathy Morante, Host Family "We loved having your singers stay with us! It has been wonderful for our entire family! We have learned a lot about other cultures & have really enjoyed living & sharing with our new guests. Your singers are graceful, warm, very respectful and very, very talented!!!!! I think the most important outcome of your program is we feel we are engaged participants in our wide & wonderful world, rather than passive observers. We would love to host another singer next year! You have done a brilliant job organizing your yearly tours. I can't think of a single idea for improving your program! Thank you!!!!" "Thank you for a wonderful program." Mukila Maitha, President United Kenyans of Chicago, IL "It was a joy to have them. They were enthusiastic, warm, and very professional. I enjoyed meeting them and I hope they enjoyed working with our choir. Thank you, and I hope we have the chance to work with your performers again in the future." Dr. Katherine Strand, Music Education Professor Indiana University, Bloomington, IN "IVE had a great time with the Singers Of United Lands! It was a very informative session and I think IVE enjoyed everything the S.O.U.L. members had to offer. Great energy and a lovely quartet of folks. We would have loved to have spent more time with them." Wolodymyr Smishkewych, Director International Vocal Ensemble, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN "The visit was great! All of the schools loved it, and the small audience at our place was truly impressed. We will definitely host the group next year as well. Thanks!" Ellen Gilbert, Executive Director Global Education Center, Nashville, TN " We cannot say enough positive things about your program. We consider ourselves lucky to have been a small part of such a great opportunity to spread cultural awareness through music. I work as a teacher's aide at the school, and I can honestly say that I have never seen our students respond the way they did towards Singers of United Lands. The evening performance even had the audience standing for an ovation. That normally doesn't happen at our school......for anything. A door to the world was opened up that day. Martins and Rory were such gentlemen while staying with us. They were polite, funny, thoughtful, talkative and wonderful to be with. They could not have been better guests. We have only good memories of our short time with the S.O.U.L. singers. We are very thankful we said "sure" when asked if we could host them." Jenny and Bruce Mickinski, Host Family Custer, MI "They were phenomenal, not just musically, but they seemed like such good people also. Thank you for pushing me to expand my teaching practices and my lessons. I believe the students will have taken more home with them today than any other ‘normal’ day in my classroom." Mike Aldworth, Spanish Teacher Naperville North HS, Naperville, IL "The team is GREAT. In fact, every teacher I saw LOVED them and said they were better than ever (but they say that every year)." Joyce Cameron, K-12 Music Teacher Clinton Community Schools, Clinton, MI "I loved your visit to Naperville North High school. I found it very inspiring, and I love what you do! You really put together a lot of cultures, and I believe many people enjoyed your wonderful voices, instruments, and humor! Thanks again!" Genevieve Janvrin, High School Music Student Naperville North HS, Naperville, IL "We really enjoyed having the group here again. They did a very nice job and were a lot of fun to work with. I look forward to having another group back here in the future." Zac Moore, General ManagerTraverse Symphony Orchestra, Traverse City, MI "S.O.U.L. was a big success in Custer! I have heard from many students, employees, and members of our school community who thought the singers were totally amazing (several folks have gone out of their way to email & telephone). We took in $220 in donations to offset the cost and I already have $500 pledged towards next year's costs. The host families LOVED the entire experience and are eager to host again. One parent of several teenage boys (very rural, masculine boys) told me that she had never seen her boys as excited about anything as they were about Rory's performance and his willingness to talk to them. She reported that her boys were downright inspired. Thank you, thank you, thank you for continuing to bring these vocalists to Michigan." Ellen Bonter, Superintendant Mason County Eastern Schools, Custer, MI "The S.O.U.L. group was amazing. They were engaging for the children, great with their language skills and kept our group fully attending for an hour (pretty incredible for 2-12 year olds!). Thank you for contacting me for this opportunity. I hope to be able to have your group back in the future." Michele Shane, Head of School The Children's House, Traverse City, MI "This year's program was great. The kids were great during the almost 45-minute full school performance. One of the 1st grade teachers was talking about how even her most wiggly students sat through the program. I have heard nothing but positives for this year's program. It was a wonderful experience this year." Shawn Towsley, Principal Northwestern Elementary, Eaton Rapids, MI "We loved hosting the singers. I thought their performance was great. It was really pleasing to see the degree to which they each absorbed the singing styles and body language of the different genres of music that they presented. That is one of the things that we stress a lot in our teaching and performing as well. I was only sorry that... I didn’t have as much time to spend with them as I would have liked." Larry Gordon, Director Village Harmony, Marshfield, VT
"I think it went very well on sunday. I think the congregation enjoyed the group very much. They are very professional. I feel very priviledged to have met with them, a very spirited group of young people. For me it was a wonderful experience." Mickey vanRiel, Host Unitarian Church of Montreal, Montreal, QC, Canada "Having booked fine arts assemblies for Bell School for 7 years, I know that students respond best when performers perform (instead of talk about performing) and when performers treat the audience as an audience (instead of as a group of mere school kids). And this is what S.O.U.L. did at Bell. The show was the right mix of singing and talking. I liked the "arc" of the show: singing, taking questions about culture, singing." Monica Drane, Bell School Volunteer/Program Coordinator Chicago, IL "Each of my classes had a great time listening and learning from the singers. I even had some other teachers bring their classes down at the high school. I was glad each singer was able to work with a choir throughout the day because it gave the choir a rehearsal experience with a different “conductor”. It was also extremely beneficial for each of the singers to share about their countries and life experiences. I hope to be able to bring a group back here in the future." Eric Cadena, Vocal Music Teacher Sturgis HS and MS, Sturgis, MI "I must say, everything went very well! The small "master" classes were so well received by students and staff. The larger assemblies were also extremely well received by all. Besides being talented and very interesting, the team was extremely pleasant to work with. Their music selections were varied and engaged students of all ages! Our community needs to be aware of what is being brought to the table for a very reasonable price!" Theresa Brown- Director of Fine & Performing Arts Newburgh School District, Newburgh, NY "[The S.O.U.L. Singers] are all wonderful, caring people that more than fulfilled the goals of S.O.U.L... You have a terrific concept here... Keep your vision... We need this. S.O.U.L.'s visit here, and participation on our concert was powerful beyond words." Steven Szalaj, Music Director Voices in Harmony, Crystal Lake, IL "The group was a great hit. I got many very nice comments from both faculty and students. The performance that evening went well and everyone was pleased with the day. I do not have nor did I hear any negative comments. All four were lovely to work with and their tour coordinator was always very helpful. You have a terrific program!" Sharon Bitterman, Choral Director Buchanan HS, Buchanan, MI "The program that S.O.U.L. presented was both educational and inspiring. I would be thrilled to have the group come back in the years to come." Peter Durow, HS Choir Teacher Clearwater, FL "I have heard nothing but good things from all age students and teachers. Students were enthralled and totally focused on their presentation. Even the smallest kindergarten child loved the music. Thank you so much for persisting in getting us to have S.O.U.L. here. We even had some parents want to know when we could have them back." Carol Drayton, Music Teacher Argenta-Oreana, IL "The concert was great and everyone enjoyed getting to meet all the singers. The host families had a blast. I was particularly impressed with how relaxed everyone was and that it was more of a casual atmosphere than a stuffy classical one... The group was wonderful and I would love to have you guys come back next year." Bryan Page, Music Director Covenant Pres. Church- Huntsville, AL "It was great having the S.O.U.L. team here with us. It lifited our hearts to be with these young people from around the planet, each one with with such optimisim, hope, joy and a sense of giving. Each wanting to do his or her part to make the world a better place. We were enriched and inspired to be able to share space with such a group. Opening our home to SOUL was a small way for us to "pay it forward" to others on this planet." David Etherington, Host Family Micanopy, FL "Thank you for sharing your cultures and songs with us. My students thoroughly enjoyed our time with you." Susan Fairhead, English Teacher St. Francis HS- Wheaton, IL "I am yet to have a less than fantastic experience with your performing groups. One kid told me as he was leaving the assembly that it was the best assembly he'd ever been to. What I like most about your group is that it gives kids a connection with other parts of the world. It makes them realize that there are other countries around the world to explore and new and interesting people to meet. The kids are begging for them to come back next year." Jenny Sanford, Music Teacher Springport, MI "S.O.U.L. was wonderful! What a pleasure hearing them, learning about new musical creations by women composers, and having the chance to talk informally... Thank you for your hard work implementing your vision. Way to go! Unity in diversity to foster world peace!" Dr. Miriam Zach, Professor of Music University of FL- Gainesville, FL
"We really enjoyed having the SOUL performers at the library! The caliber of the singing was fantastic, and I think we all learned a lot about the four cultures." Stephanie Galipeau, Children's Librarian Fort Walton Beach Public Library, FL
"The only complaint I heard was that is didn't last long enough! The performers were wonderful-- not only talented, but so interactive with the students. They loved them! I received glowing feedback from the teachers, as well! I hope we will be able to have you again next year!" Kathy Cook- Chorus Director Braden River High School, Bradenton, FL
"S.O.U.L was fantastic! The congregation loved the music and the concept and purpose of your organization. Thank you for making it possible for us to experience them. I hope you will think of us again next year." Rev. Abhi Janamanchi Unitarian Universalists of Clearwater, FL "The program yesterday was wonderful! I would like to... thank you for your vision and the program you have developed." Carold Raedy- Music Teacher St. Patrick's Elementary School, Charlotte, NC"I found the presentation very charming--a lovely connection with high school students-- very down to earth and so not pretentious." Dr. Sherry Lawrence- Fine and Performing Arts Curriculum Specialist Manatee County Public Schools, FL "We enjoyed it very much. Please contact us for next year." Bryan Flynn- Principal Rowlett Magnet Elementary, Bradenton, FL "We all really enjoyed your program. We loved meeting the group and would welcome you back!" Amy Wasser- Head of School Hillel School of Tampa, FL "Your group did a great job today." Jim Yarbrough- Vocal Music Teacher Naperville North HS, Naperville, IL "Just wanted to let you know that we really enjoyed S.O.U.L.'s visit yesterday. All went well from our point of view. I noticed that the singers interacted... with the little kids... I appreciated it. Our PTO would like to sponsor S.O.U.L. again next year." Paula Hudnutt- Music Teacher Northwestern Elementary, Eaton Rapids, MI "Their visit was a huge success and many of us still have their music running in our heads. Opportunities such as this really help to prepare students to be respectful members in a global society. S.O.U.L. engagements have been one of the most well-received and positive things we have done here at CFCC since I've been around. I am constantly hearing from students who remember the group coming to their [high schools] and who ended up here as students, which is truly wonderful for us." Dr. Jennifer Fryns- Performing Arts Manager Central FL Community College, Ocala, FL "I am one of the students from Fayetteville-Manlius high school and I just wanted to thank you for coming to our school this week. I have so much respect for you guys! Not just for your talent as musicians, but your ability to appreciate other cultures and languages. Maybe you remember, I was the one who raised my hand and asked Ting about the Malay song. I speak Korean at home, but my dad's family is from Indiana. I plan to study International Relations next year in college so I can someday help improve the situation in Korea. I wish there were more people like you. The world would be a better place, that's for sure. Good luck in all your endeavors." JoHee Park-Cunningham, Senior Fayetville-Manlius HS, Manlius, NY
"Thank you all again. My students keep stopping in and asking if they could hear you again. I just ordered the two CD's for my classes to hear. This is an experience that our students will have once in a life time. I do wish you all the best and hope to see the group next year for a week. One of my best 9th grade boys came to me and said "they were fabulous, I am going to stay in the program at the High School next year!" Stamos was sitting on the fence chorus/choir or other classes at NFA. You do make a difference. Take care and Bravo!" Herb Lamb- Music Teacher Heritage JHS, Newburgh, NY
"I would really like to have a copy of the slow Indonesian Bummmmmm- Bummmmm-Bummmmm song and also the Bulgarian Chant with the 2 men singing the pedal tone and the women singing the chant... I was very pleased with our week with SOUL. Thanks for all you did to make it happen. I would appreciate feedback from you and the singers about what worked well and what didn't, so we can improve in the future. Thanks, Kris" Kris Rust- Music Teacher Franklin Regional HS, Murraysville, PA
"You are welcome in St. Augustine anytime and we UU's will be glad to host. Their concert helped us raise over $800 for tornado victims. Most importantly, they successfully projected their mission from the moment they arrived to the moment they left. They are an impressive group of young people." Barbara Batelle- President Unitarian Universalist Church, St. Augustine, FL
"Our school just had a group of unbelievable musicians here. Their group is called SOUL (Singers of United Lands) and it was SUCH a great experience for our children. They are highly talented teachers and singers and they work with the children to teach them music and language and a little of the culture from their countries. They stay with host families -- and we were lucky enough to have two of them at our house for a week. (South Africa and Montenegro). I cannot tell the difference between a guitar and a piano, but I can tell that these people are special and the kids were enthralled... They sing traditional folk music and other music in their own languages and sing it soooooo beautifully. It was the single best exposure to music I have ever experienced." Mary Douglass- S.O.U.L. Host Family Excerpt from an email she sent to her friend- Clinton, MI"S.O.U.L. was wonderful, it left us all with a deeper appreciation of the people and music of the world. Everyone asks will and when can you return, I hope next year. I have never seen our folks so excited about a musical presentation. Thanks so much."
